WP.me

Although they do not allow registration of .me names shorter than three letters, with the help of GoDaddy, Matthew Mullenweg of WordPress managed to strike a deal with the registry and on 24 July 2009 he got his hands on WP.me. WordPress.me was registered by the same famous Ma.tt already back in 2008 during the land rush period (10 July 2008 to be precise), though the latter is still kept unproductive.

Earlier this year, Automattic, Matthew's company, also acquired WP.com from Yahoo!. There were many discussions of how to better use it - for the moment it just redirects to the main site.

The idea of WP.me is to provide short URLs, like http://wp.me/sf2B5-shorten, for WordPress users only to be used @twitter-like services.

According to Matthew (our test conclusions are in italic):

  • WP.me is the only two-letter .me domain in the world.

Not true. There is also co.me and ac.me dedicated to commercial and educational organisations in Montenegro.

  • Every blog and post on WordPress.com has a WP.me URL now.

True. It is better to say: "every blog can get a WP.me URL now". It can be done through a "Get Shortlink" button next to the "permalink" in the WordPress editor. Though, true, the links are generated for every entry, even for the old ones.

True. E.g., http://matt.wordpress.com/2009/08/13/a5-wagyu/ is also linked as http://wp.me/p4-51.

  • It doesn’t work for any URL in the world, just WP.com-hosted ones.

True.

  • The links are permanent, they will work as long as WordPress.com is around.

True. The question for how long will WordPress be around? Probably for another decade at least. According to Alexa, this site is a high riser and just made it into their global top 20 list.

  • WP.me is spam-free, because we are constantly monitoring and removing spam from WP.com.

Maybe. As Akismet doing good job, one can probably trust Automattic guys.

Now WordPress should team up with GoDaddy and allow its premium users to register sites like Berlin.its.me or MyName.Me so that they can run their fancy professional and personal blogs too.

Sedo sold more .me than .fr

.ME made it to the list of the top 10 most popular ccTLDs (country-code top level domains) sold by SEDO (Search Engine for Domain Offers). For the top nine ccTLDs the spread looks as follows:

.de (60%), .co.uk (13%), .eu (9%), .es (4%), .nl (3%), .at (3%), .tv (3%), .me (3%), .fr (2%)

Thus, in fact, .me is placed right at the level of top European countries like the Netherlands and Austria, slightly below Spain, but well above France. Good to see .me matching .tv, another exotic country with a success story to tell.

Well, .me scores better at least on two more points: it is not sinking and stands good prospects to join .EU one day.

Having said nothing about .me just turning one year old. With SEDO selling domains like cloud.me for US$22,500 - its future is bright. For those who did not read the white paper on "me" branding and marketing, the document is a must.

Jenk.me

Our friend blogger Griajeng Ruthjunitarani, who previous.ly created "me" styles on LookLet, a.k.a, FOXYQUEEN, the author of Funky.Me photo shot, a.k.a. Jenk, a.k.a. II, made an impressive collection of hacks:

absolute.ly.me amazed.us candid.ly.me

GGL.me at al

Most of us are driving machines with two big engines: Google and Microsoft. And yet, these motors constant.ly fight with each other. One can only wonder how the cars still remain on the road. Another week and yet another fight:

Google vs Microsoft Bing vs-Yahoo!

Google vs Microsoft Bing vs Yahoo!

After months of speculation and then a failed merger, Microsoft and Yahoo! announced an agreement to integrate their Internet searching and advertising businesses. Under the deal, Microsoft will incorporate Yahoo!’s search technologies into its existing web-search platforms while its Bing search engine will operate on Yahoo!’s websites. Microsoft will enter a revenue-sharing partnership with Yahoo!. Between them, the two account for 28% of Internet searches in America, compared with Google’s 65%.

Source: The Economist, August 1st, 2009

Let us leave the market share aside for the moment and compare Google's and Bing's penetration:

The former returns 728,000,000 results, while the latter only 1,050,000 (it was ~ 700,000 last week). Yes, Bing is catching up. But with 1000:1 - GGL sure.ly wins. Microsoft, Bing and Yahoo! have a long way to go.

So, next time, try also GGL in black: http://ggl.me/ and forget about the splashy advertising from Microsoft and Yahoo!. They are useless anyway.

SmartPhone.Me

Despicable.Me

Check out Despicable.Me! For many reasons. It promises to be another great animation movie. Yet, from the domaining point of view - it is revolutionary too.

Despicable.Me movie icon

Their web site is flashy indeed. Then, they did not go for DespicableMeMovie.com. Just reserved it. Yes, they did buy DespicableMe.com too, smart guys, are they not? Though the latter forward you to, guess where? Yes, Despicable.Me!

Now, the question is, how much buzz will they create before and after 9 July 2010?

For more information about the movie check: IMDB, GGL, or YouTube.

Another “me” exercise on Facebook

Facebook is full of catchy "me" exercises. And yet, below goes another one interchanging "me" and "you" questions:

Tell me honest.ly{click on the image to zoom in}

Out of 17 "tell me honest.ly" questions, 12 of them make "me" queries:

  • Give me a nickname and explain why you picked it.
  • Describe me in one word.
  • Do you still think that way about me now?
  • What reminds you of me?
  • If you could give me anything what would it be?
  • What song reminds you of me?
  • How well do you know me?
  • When was the last time you saw me?
  • Ever wanted to tell me something but couldn't?
  • What do you hate about me?
  • What do you love about me?
  • Where do you see me in seven years?

So what do you know about .me?
